Graymond: A Vintage Display Font That Elevates Brand Identity

Revamping Our Café Menu with Graymond

Recently, I helped a local café refresh their menu design. The goal was to create a warm, inviting look that matched their rustic-chic interior and community-focused vibe. We wanted typography that felt handcrafted but still professional. After testing a few options, we landed on Graymond — a vintage display font that brought exactly the right amount of character and clarity.

Graymond has a slightly weathered edge with soft serifs and a classic structure. It feels nostalgic without looking outdated, which made it perfect for the café’s new menu headers, drink names, and special offer banners. It’s the kind of font that makes you pause and notice the design — not because it’s flashy, but because it feels intentional and well-made.

Why Graymond Works for Business Branding

Typography plays a bigger role in branding than many small business owners realize. The right font can instantly communicate your brand’s personality before a single word is read. Graymond, as a vintage display font, brings a timeless quality that works especially well for brands rooted in tradition, craftsmanship, or local charm.

We used Graymond across multiple customer-facing materials — from printed menus to Instagram stories and thank-you cards. Each time, it helped reinforce a consistent visual identity. Whether on a chalkboard-style menu or a digital banner for their website, the font maintained its legibility and charm. It’s not meant for long paragraphs, but as a display font, it shines in headlines, titles, and short bursts of text where impact matters.

Real-World Uses for Graymond

Here are some of the ways we incorporated Graymond into the café’s branding:

Graymond is especially effective when used sparingly and paired with a clean supporting font. For example, we used it for headings and a simple sans serif like Montserrat for body text. This combination gave the design a balanced, modern-retro feel that was easy to read and visually engaging.

Readability and Practical Design Tips

One of the first things I check when recommending a font like Graymond is its readability across different formats. On printed menus, it held up beautifully in medium to large sizes. However, for small product labels or mobile screen headers, we opted to use it only for the main title and kept supporting text in a more neutral font.

It’s also important to consider contrast. Graymond looks best when set against a clean background — whether that’s a white mug tag or a light-colored Instagram graphic. If you’re using it on a textured or patterned background, make sure it’s bold enough to stand out without looking cluttered.

Font Pairing Made Simple

Graymond pairs well with a variety of typefaces, but here are a few combinations that work especially well in business branding:

  1. Graymond + Montserrat – A modern sans serif that balances Graymond’s vintage charm for clean, readable layouts.
  2. Graymond + Playfair Display – Another serif font that enhances the elegant, editorial feel of Graymond, ideal for luxury branding.
  3. Graymond + Pacifico – A script font that adds a personal, handwritten flair when used for accents or short phrases.

When pairing fonts, stick to using Graymond as your main display font and choose a supporting font that’s more neutral and legible. This ensures your branding feels cohesive without overwhelming the viewer.

What to Check Before Using Graymond

Before using Graymond for your own brand materials, it’s always a good idea to verify the font’s licensing and technical features. Make sure it includes:

Most premium display fonts like Graymond come with these features, but it’s always worth double-checking before finalizing your design. Also, test how the font renders on screen versus print — some vintage fonts can appear slightly pixelated at small sizes on digital platforms.
